What this detail solves
Internal angles between floors and walls — in wet areas, on roofs and in tanks — are the first place a membrane cracks if it is stretched across a square corner. A mortar fillet or cove is formed, the primer applied, a reinforcing strip embedded in the first coat across both faces, and the second coat laid continuously over it. The drawing shows a liquid-applied system under finishes; sheet systems use angle strips or pre-formed pieces at the same point.
Critical points
- Remove sharp edges and projections and form the fillet before priming; let it cure as the mortar requires.
- The reinforcing strip extends L onto both faces, per the manufacturer’s system, and is embedded while the first coat is wet.
- Apply the second coat within the recoat window of the TDS and check the dry film thickness by measurement.
- Carry the membrane up the wall to h above the finished floor per the specification — higher in shower zones.
- Leave a movement joint in the tiling at the angle and close it with a flexible sealant, not grout.
- Flood-test before the bedding and finishes.
