What this detail solves
At an external corner the membrane is pulled around a projecting edge; on a sharp arris it tears or lifts. The arris is chamfered or rounded and primed, a reinforcing strip is centred on the corner, and the field membrane is wrapped around with its laps kept away from the corner. The plan shows a basement wall corner with a sheet membrane on the outside and a protection board before backfilling.
Critical points
- Chamfer or round the arris to suit the membrane system — never on a sharp edge.
- Centre the reinforcing strip on the corner, extending L onto each face.
- Keep the field laps off the corner — offset by at least L.
- In liquid-applied systems, a reinforcing fabric is embedded in the first coat instead.
- Fix the protection board before backfilling; compact the backfill in layers without dragging it over the membrane.
