What this detail solves
The roof-to-parapet junction collects water and takes the most movement, so a mortar fillet is formed in the angle and the membrane is turned up the inner face of the parapet to a height above the finished roof level. Its top edge is fixed mechanically with a termination bar and sealed, then protected by a metal counter-flashing set in a sealed chase; a coping falling towards the roof caps the parapet. The drawing shows an inverted roof: XPS boards over the membrane, a separation layer and tiles on bedding mortar, with a perimeter movement joint at the parapet.
Critical points
- The upstand height h is measured above the finished roof level, after insulation and finishes; its value follows the approved specification.
- Form the fillet and finish the angle before priming; never bridge a square corner with the membrane.
- Reinforce angles and upstands before the field membrane — see PS-D-02.
- Fix the termination bar at the centres the manufacturer recommends and seal its top edge with a compatible sealant.
- Flood-test and record before the insulation and finishes go on.
- Leave a perimeter movement joint between the finishes and the parapet, sealed over a backer rod.
