What this detail solves
A retaining wall carries soil and water pressure together; water trapped behind it adds load and shows as efflorescence and staining on the exposed face. The soil face and the top of the heel are waterproofed with a fillet where they meet, the membrane is covered by a protection board, and a drainage layer with gravel behind the wall leads the water to a perforated drain at the heel that discharges to the drainage system.
Critical points
- Drainage behind the wall is set by the structural engineer; this detail assumes a perforated drain connected to an outlet.
- Terminate the membrane at the top of the wall, under the coping, with a fixed bar and sealant.
- Form the fillet at the stem–heel junction before priming.
- Separate the gravel from the soil with a filter geotextile so it does not clog.
- Backfill in layers once the protection is complete, keeping heavy plant away from the wall.
