What this detail solves
A basement wall is waterproofed on the water side (outside) before backfilling, so water pressure pushes the membrane onto the wall instead of off it. A protection board shields it from the backfill, then a drainage composite with a filter relieves the water pressure and leads the water to a perimeter drain at footing level. The membrane is terminated above finished ground level with a fixed bar and sealant under protection, and laps at the bottom with the foundation membrane.
Critical points
- Terminate the membrane h above finished ground level per the specification, with its edge protected from UV and damage.
- Fill tie holes and repair honeycombing and cracks before priming.
- The filter geotextile faces the soil so the drainage core does not clog.
- The perimeter drain sits in gravel wrapped in geotextile, connected to an outlet or an inspection chamber.
- With high groundwater, choose the system and grade of protection using the BS 8102 classification.
