What this detail solves
A planter is a permanently wet box loaded by soil, water and roots. Fillets go in the internal angles, a root-resistant membrane is laid (or a root barrier added over it), turned up the walls above the finished soil level, fixed and sealed. Over the membrane: a protection board and a drainage layer covered by a filter, leading water to an outlet where the membrane is clamped by a ring, with an inspection access for maintenance.
Critical points
- Use a membrane resistant to root penetration, or a separate root barrier over it, to suit the planting.
- Carry the membrane h above the finished soil level, as specified.
- Flood-test before the protection, drainage and soil.
- Turn the filter up the walls so soil cannot wash into the drainage layer.
- Keep an inspection access over the outlet for cleaning.
