What this detail solves
Pool waterproofing works under permanent water pressure and under tiles, so it must be continuous from the floor up the wall, over the wall head and under the deck. Corners get a fillet and a reinforcing strip, a flexible cementitious waterproofing goes on in two coats, then the tiles on an adhesive and grout suited to immersion, with movement joints in the tiling at the corners. The deck falls away from the pool so surface water does not get behind the coping.
Critical points
- Water-test the shell before waterproofing where specified, then empty and dry it as the system requires.
- Apply the two coats crosswise, with reinforcing strip at the corners and around the fittings.
- Fittings — inlets, lights, drains — are sealed with pre-formed pieces or collars per the manufacturer.
- Adhesive and grout suited to permanent immersion and to the pool water chemistry.
- Fill-test after waterproofing and before tiling where specified.
