Movement joint in floors
A flush movement joint in a waterproofed floor: flexible joint tape looped over the slab joint, and the joint carried through the screed and finish with sealant over a backer rod.

What this detail solves
Where movement runs through a waterproofed, finished floor — on podiums, in car parks or wet areas — the waterproofing and the finish must move with it without cracking. A flexible joint tape is bonded either side of the slab joint with its middle left free in a loop, the joint is carried straight up through the protection screed and the finish, and it is closed with a backer rod and a sealant bonded to the two faces only, with protected edges where there is traffic.
Critical points
- The sealant width-to-depth ratio (w:d) follows the sealant TDS.
- A closed-cell backer rod stops the sealant bonding to the joint bottom (three-sided adhesion).
- The finish joint sits exactly over the slab joint, at the same width or wider.
- Protect the joint edges in trafficked areas with a profile or a strong repair mortar.
- Check the sealant adhesion with a pull test where the specification requires it.
