What this detail solves
An expansion joint separates parts of a structure that move independently, so no tight membrane can cross it. On roofs the joint is raised on two concrete kerbs that keep it out of the water path; the membrane is turned up each kerb, a flexible joint band is bonded across both kerbs with a loop over the gap for the movement, and a metal cover fixed on one side only protects it and moves with the joint.
Critical points
- The joint width w and its design movement come from the structural engineer; the band and sealants are chosen for that movement.
- Leave a loop in the band over the gap; never bond it to the bottom.
- Fix the metal cover on one side only — fixing both sides stops the movement.
- Raise the kerbs above the finished roof level (h) as specified.
- Carry the joint through every layer to the finish; never cover it with a continuous screed or tiles.
