Construction joint at a wall kicker
A cold joint between the base and a basement or tank wall: roughened surface, a cast-in waterstop where specified, and a crystalline-treated chase along the joint.

What this detail solves
A construction joint is the plane between two pours that never bond completely, so it stays a possible water path under pressure. The first pour is roughened and its laitance removed, a cast-in waterstop is set at mid-thickness where the specification calls for one, and the face of the wall is treated: a chase along the joint packed with crystalline mortar over a crystalline slurry, with slurry coats carried well above and below the joint.
Critical points
- Remove the laitance, roughen and clean the first pour before the second.
- Where a cast-in waterstop is used, it sits at mid-thickness, continuous through the manufacturer’s joints, and must not fold during the pour.
- The chase size and its mortar follow the approved crystalline system; saturate the concrete before application.
- Moist-cure the crystalline coats for the period the TDS states.
